Getting laid off in November, then getting a cold that doesn't want to go away, has

given me a lot of time to do very little. Hence the reading I have been doing lately.

It also has given me some time to redo my resume several times.

I have had a few interviews in the last week.

The jobs involve working on something a little different for me.

The good thing is that it won't involve the general public.

A few more shops have asked for my resume as well. Apparently,

people are talking and a few might be interested in my mechanical

background. I hope one of these jobs comes through.

It might make for an interesting year and a few interesting posts.

If your looking for something current with the headlines and Discovery channel programs

you see on the club today, then pass on this book.

This one starts in the late 50's and goes into the early 70's.

Written around the time when guys like

Terry the Tramp, Johnny Angel, Magoo, Mouldy Marvin, Cisco, and Sonny Barger

were just starting out on their long voyage through drugs, sex, violence, jail, brotherhood,

and death. This one was hard for me to put down at times.

I don't know how much of it is real or how much is fake.

Written by one who eventually snitched on his brothers, it could be all

of one or the other.

This one I recommend highly. I am going to put it in my collection to reread again.

This one failed to deliver.

"The Hemi in the Barn" is Tom Cotters follow up to "Cobra in the Barn".

Filled with great stories and pictures of old cars and how they were discovered.

Tom even threw in a few tips at the end of the book for finding your own "Barn Find".

I recommend this one for all motor enthusiasts.

Ron, as soon as I get the Cobra in the Barn book back from Kevin, I'll get it to you.

After reading Patriots a few years ago, I was really looking forward to reading the new book from James Wesly Rawles, titled "Survivors".

Kevin lent me this one as well. (The Bowl Sprayers Book Club is alive and well.)

Taking place after "The Crunch", this one follows the same time period as his previous book "Patriots".

There were a lot of similarities between the two books. Ultra light aircraft, silver coins as money, gangs, guns, short wave radios, etc... I was a little disappointed in this one. If you like end of the world style books this may be up you alley.

"I remember Papa Bear" by Dick Lattimer.

Fred Bear is to archery as Sam Colt is to pistols, or

Carol Shelby is to Mustang, or Richard Petty is to NASCAR, or

well you get the idea.

Focusing more on his business and less about Fred's Personal life.

I enjoyed this one.

From a part time business to a manufacturer and world wide distributor of archery equipment, this book covers his hunts, promotions, patents, clubs, associations, taxes, conservation efforts, unions, moving the company, and even has a chapter about NASA.

Fred thought outside the box and was always looking forward. He was a mentor, friend, and father figure to many who knew him. Ted Nugent fell into this category and wrote about Fred in his books as well as producing a song about Fred after his death.

"I remember Papa Bear" will go into my collection of books to keep and reread.

I woke up around 3:30am on Christmas day feeling worn out.

Runny nose, burning eyes, sick as hell!!

It's been a week of rest and meds. I still not 100 percent but

I am feeling better.

With all that time and nothing to do but lay in bed, I got a bunch of reading done.

Kevin lent me "The Zombie survival guide" by Max Brooks.

Not a bad read. I have a few other survival books/manuals in my collection of books and this one follows along the same lines as those, but with a Zombie twist. There is lots of info on threat levels, safety, food, weapons, defence, and more. If you need to prepare for the upcoming zombie war, then get this book.

Who is Eddie Aikau?

During my Florida days of surfing, the name Eddie Aikau meant "Hawaii and Big Waves".

I knew he was a Hawaiian legend, big wave rider, died at sea,

there is a Big Wave contest named after him and that was it.

I never knew the real story of Eddie Aikau.

That was until I read EDDIE WOULD GO by

Stewart Holms Coleman.

From a high school dropout, who lived in a graveyard with his family.

Eddie became the first life guard at Waimea Bay, a profession surfer,

musician, accomplished waterman, and Hawaiian legend.

Respected by all who knew them. The Aikau's had many hanai (adopted) sons and daughters.

As Bill Pierce (one of the first black surfers) said "They've helped a lot of people.

If you were giving of yourself and have a decent heart, they were going to take you in, and that's what happened to me and the others." Their 'ohana (family) was based on love not blood.

Coming from a family like this Eddie was always giving and looking out for others.

He saved many lives while a life guard and during surf contests (even when he was competing).

So it came as no surprise that he died trying to save his fellow sailors on the Hokule'a.

"EDDIE WOULD GO"

is a story about a humble man, his family, his friends, and of Hawaii.

A true hero.

I deleted my "Ed, White and Blue" Blog this morning.

I have been thinking about this for a long time now.

When I first came up with EW&B, I wanted to express my thoughts

on politics, policies, the world, and AMERICA.

Unfortunately, I was not able to keep up with it.

At times I was overwhelmed with everything going on and

how fucked up things have gotten. I didn't have the time to research the

items I wanted to discuss. So, I posted pictures and videos instead.

Not what I really wanted to do with it.

I have decided to move on and focus on this blog and my new one.

I will always know and believe:

America is the best place to be.

If you want it, work for it.

Nobody owes you anything.

Just because they have it, does not mean you deserve it too.

The successful are not to be hated, they worked hard to get there, learn from them.

Government is NOT the answer, Government IS the problem.

You are guaranteed LIFE, LIBERTY, and THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS,

everything else you must work for.

Taking from those who work for it, then giving it to those who don't is called theft.

You have the right to SAY what you want,

BUT BURNING THE AMERICAN FLAG IS A PHYSICAL ACT.

I first heard Bill Van Dyke in the early 90's on an Easyrider Video.

Swap Meet Special was stuck in my head for a long time after that.

In 1999 I saw him perform at the Buffalo Chip in Sturgis.

I caught up with him later that week on main street.

I was checking out a Panhead with a cool set of saddle bags.

It turned out to be his ride. The bags were made by a brother of his

on the inside. We shot the shit for awhile. He has some good stories to tell.

Two months later I made it back to Florida.

Biketoberfest was going on and I went to see Charlie Daniels at the Broken Spoke.

The next afternoon I went to The Last Resort Bar.

Bill was playing there. He remembered me and gave me a shout out as a fellow

road Gypsy, at that time I guess I was.

We shared road tales for a few hours.

After Sturgis he want east and I had gone west to Montana

then south to Arizona.

I found these albums at Choppers on Main St. in Daytona years ago.

This year I dug them out of storage and played them for the last time.

As soon as I hung them at the Swap Meet, a father and son came by and purchased them.

They were stoked to find them. The last of my record collection found a home.

I still have a CD of his. See him if you get a chance. Country/biker/story teller/music definitely

Set in the mountains of North Carolina, One Second After

is the most realistic SHTF book I think I have read.

Death, starvation, a community coming together, no communication,

no power, and more.

This one made Patriots look like a fantasy check list for survivalists.

A few hot rods thrown in the middle of a love story.

This one gets painful to watch and seems to

drag out FOREVER at the end.

The director, actor, main character, promoter, leg shower,

and anything else with a title in this movie,

really missed what guys want in a Hot Rod movie with this one.

More cars, more racing, more fighting, even more fucking,

would have helped.

Women who rent this one won't see what is that bad about it.

Guys...You've been warned!!

Last time I saw Roby he was riding a V-Strom.

After riding it from Knoxville, TN back to Troy, NY

he hated the V-Strom. Hurt to ride, no soul, and

all around lame in his opinion.

So as the Hudson river flooded over it's banks and

into his neighborhood from Hurrican Irene.

He hatched a plan to upgrade. Listed the V-Strom Friday, Sold it Saturday,

Found this Triumph on Sunday, and brought it home Monday.

1700 miles on this little Triumph, with a few upgrades.

The Hudson had risen within two streets of his house when

he came home.

I got an invite to go hear a WWII speak last night at the local Lions Club meeting.

He was attached to the Jolly Rogers Squadron in the Pacific Theater.

He went over some history of WWII, how he enlisted, were he was stationed,

war stories, and more.

Jolly Rogers insignia on the tail.

There aren't many WWII vets around these days. If you get the chance to talk to one,

I suggest you do. The stories are great and need to be passed down to the younger generation.

I met Tom at the AMCA meet. Told him I was looking for FXR and FXRT parts.

He said he had a set of bags for sale.

Tom sent me this pic of his FXRT before he removed the fairing and bags.

I wanted to buy the bags, but he sprayed them with bed liner and still wants ebay price

for them.

Roadside heard I was looking for guages for my '82 FXR build.

So he went digging through his stash for me.

He dropped them off at Ian's last month while he was up in SC.

I was able to pick them up last week.

Damn these are nice.

With my truck in the shop, I took my '92 FXRS and hit the raod for work.

I stopped in and stayed with Ian and Monica for a night.

Ian was working on Moe's Road King and had to go to Hawg Wild to

pick up a part.

Look what was there!!!!!!

We left before my pants got tight.

While working at night the storms rolled in. By morning they were gone.

They left behind some reminders of mother natures fury.

So, I got to ride a few hundred miles, see friends, see an FXRT, and have a few laughs.

And get some work done.

It was good to see Ian and Monica along with their fuzzy bunch.

Dustin gave me the rims for his Triumph to true last year. A week later I was on the road for 6 months.

It took awhile for me to get them back to him.

It was his grill I borrowed at the Steel in Motion show.

Monday I came home parked my truck and went up stairs.

My neighbor came running up and told me my truck had rolled back into the wall.

BBQ grill in bed of truck and truck against wall.

She wouldn't start.

Ouch!!

Right side looks good.

Left side no so much.

I was supposed to get the grill back by Wed. I called Dustin and told him it may be a little longer.

A little over $900 and the trans indicator was fixed as were the parking brakes.

Bumper is $600 to fix and will have to wait.

We did get the grill back to the shop on Monday.

Knowing that I am a nut about old firearms, Rusty told me about a Gun shop that has a Civil War Museum/Collection.

Pin fire, percussion, and a few old flint locks.

Carbines.

North Uniforms.

South Uniforms.

Recovered tools from a Confederate ship yard.

Galley stove from a scuttled Confederate ship.

It's a small private collection, but worth the $4 entry fee.

The Shop has a nice collection of WW2 fire arms on display.

I had to work in Myrtle Beach during Bike Week.

I really don't care for Myrtle Beach and I hate Bike Week there.

Lucky for me Rusty and Meggen live there now.

They let me crash at their place.

We hung out while I was there cooking out, working on bikes, shooting the shit, and

having a good time.

The AMCA held another meet at the Denton Farm Park.

Presentation in Honor of Donnie Shue

Donnie Shue, who grew up in Concord, was a soldier who went missing in action in Vietnam. Shue's remains were recently located in Laos after missing since 1969. His remains were flown from Laos to Pearl Harbor then to Charlotte. On April 30th starting at the Charlotte airport his remains were escorted by the Patriot Guard, Vietnam Vets MC, and many other clubs and riders to Concord. There was a small ceremony in Concord, then they proceeded to escort the remains to the funeral home in Kannapolis.
There was an estimated 1,000 riders in the procession. The local Lions club put Flags out along the route. When the bikes started rolling down Union St. were I was located it was deafening. Locals wandered out to the street holding American flags, some placed their hands over there hearts, some saluted, a few had tears in their eyes. The Red Cross did a great job handing out water bottles to the riders.

When the line of bikes came to a stop. I went and offered the use of my apartment bathroom to those that needed it.

Those who did not go to the ceramony followed me to my apartment.

What started out as 5 friends turned into about 30 people. The line for the bathroom went out my

front door and down the hall. They drank all my soda, beer, and a bunch of water.

After the bladders were empty, beverages consumed, hugs and Thank yous were exchanged,

it was time to roll on to the funeral home.

John, Jammer, Rick, Jeff, Bill, Jackie, and many others from the Mt. Holly/Gastonia crew were there.

1973 VW Van FOR SALE!!!!

I was going to buy this van a few years back. Money and space prevented me from doing so.

The current owner is being treated for cancer in Colorado.

I have been asked to help sell it.

Here is what I know.

1973 Westfailia VW Van.

Parked about 5 years ago.

New brakes and 1600cc motor installed before parking.

Clear NC title.

No battery in it.

Bring your own to see if it will run. Spark plugs may help too.

It's rough looking but solid when I last looked at it about 2 years ago.

Has a sun roof and part of the camper top is missing. I think it was a cover.

I think some of the interior is original. Bench seat folds into a bed.

Cabinet space every where.

Seats are out of another car and not original.

Stove. I think it is gas.

Sink. Not sure if the water tank is still in it. It does have water hook ups on it like a RV.

The current owner does have all receipts for parts and work done.

Plus, service manuals go with the van. There may be a grateful dead cassette hidden somewhere in the van.

Yours if you can find it.

These vans get about 40mpg. Better than a new car.

Price is $1200 obo.

After the Revenge Run, it was unpack and pack.

I had to be at Ron's by 6am.

I was to help him with a job installing carriage doors in Pinehurst.

We took Ron's '63 International.

The doors were on in a day. That was the easy part.

We made it to Wilmington, got a room, something to eat, cleaned up a little, and

headed to the bar.

Someone gave Grey a belt and drive set up.

He just had to install it.

By the time we pulled into the campground Ian and I were at the head of

a huge pack of bikes.

Fucking cool was all I could say.

Wish I had a picture of it.

Get to the campground, find a spot, spray on bug spray, put up tent fast,

more bug spray, get beer and food, more bug spray, laugh at the families camping near by,

apply more bug spray, check out crabs and fire on beach, more bug spray, get in tent

as fast as possible, and sleep.

Mike went around a truck, then Grey pulled out and whipped back in a slowed down fast.

As I went past him he yelled that he had no gears or forward momentum.

Revenge Run II Friday Pt. 1

Thursday night after getting lost several times we made it back to the hotel.

Kevin's bike was having a hard time starting and running at low rpm's.

A new set of plugs fixed it.

Then he heard a nasty sound coming from the primary. The primary

chain shoe was almost cut in half and the chain was slapping like crazy.

We made it to the dealership, pulled the primary off, removed the melted nylon that was

the old shoe and installed a new one made for a twin cam.

It worked (kind of).

Down the road we went at the end of a slow pack of bikes.

Due to the small fuel tanks of some bikes, the pack was stopping every 30 miles.

We decided to wait for the pack to leave. Then blast past them and stop every 60 miles.

We would be at the lunch stop first and be rested by the time the pack arrived.

No Problem. Right?

The weekend before Easter, Kristen and I went to Knoxville, TN for the Annual

Low Country Boil at the Houtz compound.

We arrived Friday night and had a killer dinner with Dave, Sherri, Brian, and Noel.

Saturday it was over cast and nasty. It didn't prevent everybody from coming out and having a great time.

I didn't get many pics on Sat.

Sherri doing some kind of tight rope walking. Not sure what this was

all about. The drunks sure liked trying it and getting smacked in the crotch when they fell off.

The sun came out for a perfect Sunday after the party.

Roby and Andrew arrived on Sunday. They had to hold up in a hotel

somewhere in VA, due to pouring rain and golf ball sized hale.

Say cheese.

I wish I had more time to catch up with Roby and Andrew, but we had to get back to NC.

As always it was a good time with good food and good friends.

Kristen and I went over to Matt's for a cookout on Sunday.

Matt had just put a new motor in his 29.

Last minute carb adjustments.

Mike and I bolted from Daytona Friday morning.

We had 500 miles of highway to cover. Twist the throttle and go!

It was a great trip and I enjoyed seeing and meeting everyone.

FXR at the last gas stop before making it home.

Now my final thought.

I spent a week riding with Mike, and saw Dave, Sherri, Louis, Matthew,

Ian, Joe, Tommy, Edge, Roadside, Willie, and John and Nancy (it had been 6 years since I last saw them).

I met Moe, Doug, Brew Dude, and more.

I still have to meet Chris and his girl, and Alvarez (saw ya, just didn't get to talk to ya.)

We encountered cold, rain, loose mirrors, a blown for seal, shitty traffic, good two lane back roads,

and more.

Life can get in the way of Life.

A mortgage, car payment, TV, Facebook, and crap we want, can stop us from doing what we need.

Spend time with friends, laugh, and have a good time.

You only get one shot, there are NO do overs.

Make it count.

It's not as hard as you think.

MArch ride 2011 Part 14

Joe came up fro Jupiter to hang with us. He also had a place to crash for Mike and I.

It was about 1am when we headed out to Chris's place. I knew we were out by the Cabbage Patch.

Then we hit the dirt roads. Left, right, right, left, I was fucking lost and tired.

In the morning I walked outside to smoke and there were horses every where.

As it turned out, Chris and his girl rescue these guys and give them a good home.

I almost pissed myself when I saw this on the trailer.

They even had ones in size small.

I guess they were hungry and wanted me to feed them.

More.

Sorry man, I don't have a sugar cube.

Chris is a tattooist. His girl is an ex-pro surfer, who is studying to be a fire fighter.

They rescue the horses as well.
